MYthology
For as long as humankind has been able to write, we have told stories of dragons. In every ancient civilization, you will find a dragon in their stories. Some of the oldest discovered art and written word mentions dragons. Most ancient stories told of dragons in the western world are examples of “Chaoskampf” (sometimes referred to as “Dracomachy”) - a battle between a serpent or dragon and a hero deity/god.
Order Vs Chaos
The importance of the hero mytheme is clear; the differentiation between what is right and what is wrong and triumphing over the latter. However, in ancient times it was less of what was "good" or "evil", and more-so what was chaotic and what was structured. The dragon in ancient times represented freedom, liberation, a unified state, the feminine, sexuality, etc. Ancient texts portraying the controlling of those things was a way to represent the structure of an advancing culture and civilization. However, this progresses from an "Order Vs Chaos" mytheme to a "Good Vs Evil" one over time with the rising of Christianity.
